Supporting Children and Families Through Inclusive Early Intervention Services
Many developmental differences and disabilities become apparent during the first three years of a child’s life. New Directions Early Head Start partners with families and local early intervention programs to support infants and toddlers with diagnosed disabilities or suspected developmental delays.
Early intervention services, individualized support, and thoughtful changes to everyday routines and environments can help children strengthen their skills, participate more fully, and reach meaningful developmental goals.
Our Commitment to Inclusion
New Directions Early Head Start is committed to serving children with all types of disabilities, including children with significant support needs. At least 10 percent of the program’s funded enrollment opportunities are reserved for children with disabilities.
Our program provides inclusive services that recognize each child’s strengths, abilities, individual needs, and right to participate fully in learning, play, family routines, and community experiences.
How We Support Children and Families
Individualized SupportStaff work with families and service providers to understand each child’s strengths, needs, developmental goals, and recommended supports. |
Inclusive LearningActivities, environments, materials, and daily routines can be adapted so children of all abilities can participate, learn, play, and build relationships. |
Family PartnershipsParents and caregivers are essential members of their child’s educational team. Staff partner with families throughout planning, service coordination, evaluation, and transition processes. |
Advocacy and ResourcesFamilies receive information about early intervention, special education laws, family rights, advocacy, community services, and available resources. |
Parents and Caregivers as Advocates
New Directions Early Head Start recognizes parents and caregivers as an integral part of their child’s education and development. Families are encouraged and supported in advocating for their children, participating in service planning, and making informed decisions about their child’s care and education.
Our staff can help families understand their rights, prepare for meetings, coordinate services, and support children as they transition into, within, or out of the program.
Early Intervention Partnerships
NDEHS works with community organizations and early intervention providers, including Delaware’s Birth to Three Early Intervention Program, to coordinate services based on the individual needs of children and families.
